LONDON – Terence Kernaghan (London North Centre), Peggy Sattler (London West) and Teresa Armstrong (London–Fanshawe) released a statement following the passing of Irene Mathyssen:
“Today, alongside our community, we mourn the loss of Irene Mathyssen. Though we mourn her passing, we also give thanks for all that Irene gave to us and to the country she served so faithfully,” said Kernaghan. “Her legacy resides not only in the public record of her accomplishments, but in the lives she touched, the voices she helped amplify, the rights she defended, and the generations of advocates who will continue the struggles to which she dedicated herself. The causes she championed remain as vital as ever, and the values she exemplified will continue to guide our work.
“Irene was a woman who stood about five feet tall, but what she lacked in height, she made up for tenfold in heart, determination, and grit. She took on fights that giants would struggle to withstand, and she never backed down when it came to standing up for those who needed a voice. Though she is no longer with us, her impact will endure, and her memory will forever remain in the hearts of our community. Irene’s life exemplified the famous line, ‘education is not filling a bucket but lighting a fire.’ She inspired everyone through her life and work.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Irene Mathyssen, a dedicated public servant, a lifelong champion for social justice and deep advocate for London,” said Sattler. “Throughout her time at Queen’s Park and in Ottawa, Irene fought tirelessly to improve the lives of Londoners and she was a fierce advocate for women’s rights, public health care, and affordable education, often standing up for people whose voices too often went unheard.
“Irene’s commitment to London and its residents left a lasting mark on our community,” said Armstrong. “Her legacy is one of dedication, courage and an unwavering belief that government has a responsibility to make life better for everyone. We extend our deepest condolences to Irene’s family, friends, and all those who knew and loved her. She will be deeply missed.”
