Ford government silent as CAMI workers wait for answers on GM talk

QUEEN’S PARK — Ontario NDP MPP Terence Kernaghan (London North Centre) is sounding the alarm over the Ford government’s deafening silence as CAMI workers wait for updates on the federal government’s discussions with General Motors. Kernaghan pressed the Premier in Question Period yesterday, demanding to know what action the province has taken to protect workers whose livelihoods are on the line.

“For weeks, CAMI workers have been completely left in the dark about what their future holds,” said Kernaghan. “The federal government got GM to the table and set a deadline. That deadline came and went with absolutely nothing. At least the federal government pretended to stand up for workers. From the province, there has been complete silence.”

Kernaghan said workers at the Ingersoll plant are watching their futures slip through the cracks as governments fail to provide clarity, leadership, or real commitment to protecting local jobs.

“CAMI workers have given everything to this province. They showed up through uncertainty, they rebuilt this plant with billions in public dollars, and they trusted that their government would actually fight for them,” said Kernaghan. “Instead, we have a Premier who refuses to tell workers what he has done or who he has spoken to. Right now, it looks like nothing. And workers deserve far better than a government that chooses silence over standing with them.”

With hundreds of good auto jobs hanging in the balance, Kernaghan says the Ford government must stop hiding, demand transparency from GM, and ensure that any public money tied to EV production comes with real, enforceable job guarantees.
